Did you know that by reducing tobacco use in Vermont, we can reduce sky-rocketing health care costs? Currently the state receives $27 million in tobacco settlement payments each year. Those payments will increase by at least $13 million this year. Our legislators have a unique opportunity to fully fund tobacco control and prevention programs using these tobacco settlement funds. Unfortunately, the current Vermont Appropriations is recommending level funding for tobacco cessation programs.
Right now, Vermont spends over $72 million each year to treat tobacco-related illnesses. This financial burden can be greatly reduced by investing in tobacco control and prevention programs. We can save lives and reduce the amount of money Vermont spends on tobacco related illnesses!
Please call, e-mail, or write your legislator, who serves on the Senate appropriations committee, and ask him or her to fully fund tobacco control and prevention programs and increase funding by $3.3 million dollars in fiscal year 2009. Remind him or her to think strategically about how they spend the tobacco settlement dollars, we need to invest in tobacco cessation and prevention programs that will reduce tobacco use and save us millions in Medicaid.
